The rules for using this site, and the terms of the firm’s text reminder service. The short version: nothing here is legal advice, reading it does not make you a client, and text is for scheduling only.

These terms govern your use of neilbrookslaw.com and the firm’s text messaging service. Using the site means you accept them. If you do not, stop using the site.

This site is not legal advice

Everything on this website is general information about criminal law in British Columbia. It is written to help people understand what they are facing. It is not advice about your case, it cannot account for facts the firm has not seen, and it must not be relied on as a substitute for speaking to a lawyer. Criminal law changes, and a page that was accurate when written may not be accurate when you read it.

No solicitor-client relationship

Reading this site, sending a message through the consultation form, or exchanging emails or texts with the firm does not make you a client. A solicitor-client relationship begins only when the firm and the client sign a retainer agreement and the firm confirms it has been retained. Until then, do not send anything you would not want disclosed, and be aware that limitation periods and court dates continue to run whether or not you have counsel.

Text message terms

• What we send. Appointment reminders, court date reminders, and scheduling changes to existing and prospective clients who have given a mobile number and agreed to receive them. No marketing.
• Opting out. Reply STOP to any message to end texts to that number. Reply HELP, or call (250) 661-1893, for assistance.
• Frequency and cost. Message frequency varies with activity on your file. Message and data rates may apply. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
• Not a channel for advice. Text is for scheduling. Do not send instructions, disclosure, or details of a charge by text, and do not treat an unanswered text as notice to the firm.
• Privacy. Mobile numbers and consent are never sold, rented, or shared for third party marketing. See the Privacy Policy.

Past results

Any result described on this site was reached on its own facts, before a particular judge, on a particular record. Past results do not guarantee or predict the outcome of any future matter, and no one should read a described outcome as a promise about their own case.

Links to other sites

Where this site links to a court registry, a statute, a reported decision, or a booking or payment page operated by a third party, the firm does not control that site and is not responsible for its content, availability, or handling of your information. Those sites have their own terms.

Intellectual property

The text, design, and materials on this site belong to Neil Brooks Law Corporation. You may read, print, and share pages for your own use. Republishing this content, in whole or in part, or using it to train a commercial model, requires written permission.

Limitation of liability

The site is provided as it is. To the extent the law permits, the firm is not liable for any loss arising from use of, or reliance on, information on this site, including any decision taken or not taken in a criminal matter without advice from a lawyer who has reviewed the file.

Jurisdiction

Neil Brooks is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia and practises law in British Columbia. Nothing on this site is an offer to practise law in any jurisdiction where the firm is not entitled to do so. These terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the laws of Canada applicable in it, and the courts of British Columbia have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them.

Changes

The firm may revise these terms. The current version is the one posted here, with the date below.
